How to share memory between ChatGPT and Claude (and keep it in sync)

Updated October 16, 2026 · Sengul Software

Short answer

ChatGPT and Claude do not share memory with each other — each keeps its own, inside its own app. You have three options: copy your context over once with Claude's memory import, paste a summary by hand every time, or connect both to a shared memory layer over MCP (Model Context Protocol) that both can read and write, so it stays in sync. Memoro is a shared memory layer for Windows: your memory stays on your own PC, and Claude, ChatGPT, Grok and Perplexity all use the same project cards.

Why your AI forgets between chats and between apps

Every new chat starts with a mostly blank slate. Built-in memories help, but they are thin and each one is locked inside a single app: ChatGPT's memory "does not retain every detail" (OpenAI), and Claude keeps a separate memory per project. When you switch from ChatGPT to Claude, or the other way round, nothing comes with you.

If you use more than one AI every day, you end up re-explaining the same project again and again.

Option 1: Claude's memory import (one-time)

Anthropic offers a memory import: you run a prompt in ChatGPT, it writes a summary of what it knows about you, and you paste that into Claude's memory settings.

It is a one-time snapshot, not a sync. Anything you decide in ChatGPT afterwards does not reach Claude, and nothing flows back from Claude to ChatGPT. Anthropic also labels the feature experimental. It is a good choice if you are moving from ChatGPT to Claude for good.

Option 2: paste a summary by hand

Keep a running summary of your project in a note and paste it at the start of every new chat. It works with any AI, but it is tedious, the note goes stale, and long chats still lose details when they get compacted.

Option 3: a shared memory layer over MCP (stays in sync)

MCP is an open standard that lets AI assistants use outside tools. A memory layer that speaks MCP can be connected to several AIs at once, so each of them reads and writes the same memory. A decision made in ChatGPT on Monday is there when you ask Claude on Tuesday.

Memoro works this way. Instead of storing chat logs, the AI keeps one short status card per project: what was decided, what was ruled out, what comes next. When a decision changes, the card is updated; older versions are kept.

Set up a shared memory with Memoro (Windows)

  1. Install Memoro from the Microsoft Store. It starts with Windows and runs in the background; a purple M appears in the taskbar.
  2. Claude Desktop is connected automatically (free).
  3. With Pro, add Memoro once as a connector in ChatGPT, claude.ai, Grok or Perplexity — the control panel shows exactly what to paste where. Some AI platforms allow custom connectors only on their own paid plans.
  4. Keep working. In a new chat, in another AI or on your phone, ask "where were we?" and continue where you left off.

Example prompts

“Where were we on the kitchen renovation?”

“Save this decision to my memory: we go with supplier B.”

“What did we rule out last time, and why?”

“Update the project card: next step is the price comparison.”

FAQ

Can ChatGPT and Claude share memory natively?

No. Each keeps its own memory inside its own app. To use one memory in both, you need an external memory layer that both connect to, such as Memoro.

Does Claude's memory import keep ChatGPT and Claude in sync?

No. It copies a one-time snapshot from ChatGPT into Claude. Later changes are not synced in either direction.

Where is my memory stored with Memoro?

In a database in your own Windows user folder. There is no account and no server of ours. If you turn on the optional cloud bridge, a copy lives in your own free Cloudflare account.

Is it free?

Using Memoro with Claude Desktop is free, with no time or memory limit. Pro ($9.99/year or $1.99/month) adds claude.ai, ChatGPT, Grok and Perplexity, phone access and multi-PC sync. Every new install gets all Pro features free for 7 days, no card.

Does it work on Mac?

Not yet — Memoro is for Windows 10/11 today. Mac is planned.

Is this the MIT Media Lab Memoro, or Mem0?

No. Memoro: Long-Term Memory for AI is a Windows desktop app by Sengul Software, distributed through the Microsoft Store (ID 9PBM9N3NDSDX). It gives Claude, ChatGPT, Grok and Perplexity one shared memory stored on your own PC. It is not related to the MIT Media Lab research project of the same name (a wearable memory assistant) or to Mem0 (a memory API for developers).
