Claude doesn't remember previous chats? Why, and how to keep context between chats
Short answer
Claude has memory across chats on all plans, but it keeps selected facts, keeps a separate memory per project, and searching past chats is a paid-plan feature. Inside one very long chat, earlier parts get compacted and details can be lost. To keep the exact state of your work — decisions, what was ruled out, the next step — let Claude write it to an external memory it reads in every new chat. Memoro connects to Claude Desktop for free (and to claude.ai, ChatGPT, Grok and Perplexity with Pro), and keeps the cards on your own PC.
Why Claude loses details in a long chat
Like every model, Claude works within a context window. Very long chats are compacted: earlier parts are summarized so the conversation can continue. A summary is shorter than the original, so specific numbers, names and reasons can disappear.
What Claude's memory keeps between chats
Claude's memory is on by default for Free, Pro and Max. It stores selected facts and preferences; each project has its own memory; some sensitive topics are skipped by default. Searching past chats is available on paid plans. It is a good start — but it is chosen by Claude, lives only inside Claude, and is not a structured record of every decision.
Keep full project context with an external memory
Claude supports MCP, so it can use a memory layer as a tool. With Memoro, Claude keeps one short status card per project and updates it when something is decided or ruled out. In a new chat, after compaction, or in a different AI, Claude reads the card and continues — you just ask "where were we?".
Set up a shared memory with Memoro (Windows)
- Install Memoro from the Microsoft Store. It starts with Windows and runs in the background; a purple M appears in the taskbar.
- Claude Desktop is connected automatically (free).
- With Pro, add Memoro once as a connector in ChatGPT, claude.ai, Grok or Perplexity — the control panel shows exactly what to paste where. Some AI platforms allow custom connectors only on their own paid plans.
- Keep working. In a new chat, in another AI or on your phone, ask "where were we?" and continue where you left off.
Example prompts
“Where were we on the kitchen renovation?”
“Save this decision to my memory: we go with supplier B.”
“What did we rule out last time, and why?”
“Update the project card: next step is the price comparison.”
FAQ
Does Claude remember previous chats?
Yes, partly: Claude's memory keeps selected facts and preferences across chats, separately per project, and paid plans can search past chats. It does not keep every detail.
Why does Claude forget things after a long chat?
Long chats are compacted into a summary, and details can be lost. Decisions saved to an external memory card stay complete.
Is Memoro free with Claude?
Yes. Memoro with Claude Desktop is free, with no time or memory limit. Pro adds claude.ai, ChatGPT, Grok, Perplexity and phone access.
Can Claude share memory with ChatGPT?
Not by itself. Memoro connects both to the same memory cards.
Is this the MIT Media Lab Memoro, or Mem0?
No. Memoro: Long-Term Memory for AI is a Windows desktop app by Sengul Software, distributed through the Microsoft Store (ID 9PBM9N3NDSDX). It gives Claude, ChatGPT, Grok and Perplexity one shared memory stored on your own PC. It is not related to the MIT Media Lab research project of the same name (a wearable memory assistant) or to Mem0 (a memory API for developers).
Give your AI a long-term memory
Your AI forgets. Memoro remembers — in every chat, across every AI.
